Real Rocks Climbing FAQ
Are there any health restrictions for climbing?
This activity is not recommended for pregnant women, people with serious heart conditions nor those recently suffering from back or neck injuries.
Are you currently running deep water solo tours?
We, as well as every other climbing school in Krabi, regret to inform you that we have temporarily stopped running our Deep Water Solo Tours due to the National Parks Service closing off access to the cliff jumping site. The NP is investigating the safety procedures of a number of tour operators who access the site, and until all inspections are passed no one is allowed to go. We feel this is a good step for Thai authorities to establish a higher level of standard with regard to tourist safety. Sorry for any inconvenience, however our rock climbing guided sessions on Railay Beach continue as usual.
Does weather, in particular, rain affect your tours? What is the cancellation policy?
Weather rarely affects our abilities to run tours. Even when it rains there are walls and routes on the beach that remain dry and protected all year round. In the event that we cannot run the tour due to extreme weather conditions (very rare) we offer full refunds.
How far in advance do I need to book a session?
In the high season (November-April) the earlier you book the better since we tend to get full most days, particularly during the Christmas/New Year week. During the low season (May-October) you can book up to one day before.
How hard are the climbs?
In Railay there is something for everyone! For beginners there are plenty of climbs on the beach graded at 5-6a (French system) and for intermediate to advanced climbers a wide variety of climbs throughout several walls located in Railay and Tonsai ranging from 6a-7c.
How high is the tallest climb in the beginner’s tour?
The shortest route offered for beginners as a warm up is 10 meters, the longest route up to 30 meters!
How large are the groups in your climbing tours and courses?
The groups are a maximum ratio of 4 climbers to 1 guide for each tour and course we offer.
How many climbs will I get if I book a half day climbing groups course?
The number depends on the ability and pace of the group, but the average is 4-5 climbs per person.
I want to climb, but my partner just wants to hang out on the beach and watch. Can them come too?
We welcome your family, friends or partners to tag along. In Railay, all the climbing walls are accessible on foot. If you stay on the mainland (i.e. Krabi Town or Ao Nang) there is a transfer fee of just 300 THB per person which will guarantee a spot in the taxi for them as well as round trip boat tickets to and from Railay Beach. We only allow a maximum of two additional passengers per booking.
I’m an experienced climber and I would just like to hire a guide as a rope gun/belay partner, how much do you charge?
For experienced climbers we recommend hiring a private rock climbing guide. Our half day is just 3,000 THB (per person) and full day is 4,500 THB (pp). You can book directly on the website, simply select the Private Session option from the tour you wish to book.
I’m coming to Railay to climb with a bunch of friends and don’t want to carry the heavy ropes and gear, do you guys offer gear rental service?
Yes, we have gear available for rent daily. You can stop by the shop to check out the gear, grab a guidebook and ask for tips on where to climb.
I’ve climbed indoors at a gym many times but this is my first time climbing outdoors. Which course would you recommend?
We recommend you check out our Certified Courses page for rock climbing instruction, or our Intermediate & Private Climbing Tours. No lines, no waiting around, and the one-on-one teaching you could really up your game with!
If I come with a large group, can we get a discount?
Yes, groups that are larger than 8 people are eligible for a special group rate. Contact us today for a quote!
If I want to visit Railay and climb for many days, are there special rates offered?
If you wish to climb for multiple consecutive days, apart from the coursework offered, we can create a custom climbing tour program for you. Email us today with your travel plans!
Is it safe? Has there ever been an accident?
Sport climbing is one of the safest outdoor activities in the world! Our gear and equipment is replaced every 3-6 months and we use only the top internationally recognized brands. Our guides are all licensed sport climbing instructors under the Southeast Asian Climbing Federation, and we at Real Rocks pride ourselves on our No-Accident Record since we first started teaching in 2001.
Yes. The guides will walk you step by step from the very beginning, how to put on the gear, how to use the equipment, how to tie-in and basic how-to stay safe while climbing. You’re in good hands ☺
Should I bring my own shoes and harness with me?
